Week 3- Ron Mueck's sculpture and Humanism

1. Mueck's sculpture is described as 'hyper-real'. Define the meaning of this term and apply it to his work.

Hyper-real: means distorting or exaggerating reality in Sociology and Philosophy. When referring it to Fine Arts & Visual Arts it means” involving or characterized by particularly realistic graphic representation.” Extremely realistic in detail.

The Human like figure of Mueck’s sculpture is larger or smaller than real world. He doesn’t make life size sculpture. His works have some vitality, although look strange. . Also full of tired, anxiety, or autism, panic, or anger, anxiety, realistic detail in both blood vessels, wrinkles or body hair, are presented honestly and literally.

2. Mueck is not interested in making life size sculpture. Find out why he is more interested
In working with the scale of the figure which is not life size, and mention 2 works which use
scale that is either larger or smaller than life.

His art work discoveries the accurate details of the real life. He wants to show the detail the real world to viewer. That is the key point of his works.
"I never made life-size figures because it never seemed to be interesting. We meet life-size people every day.'" says Mueck. He also said "It makes you take notice in a way that you wouldn’t do with something that’s just normal".

Example1: smaller than life

Example 2: larger than life.

3. Define Renaissance Humanism, and analyze the term in order to apply it to an example of Mueck's work. Note that the contemporary definition of Humanism is much broader than the Renaissance definition.

Renaissance humanism emphasized on the dignity of humanity, and that humanists shifted intellectual emphasis away from theology and logic to specifically human studies. Contemporary Humanism believes a qualified optimism about the capacity of people.

Example: “big man” I am a man and a thinker.

4. Research and discuss one of Mueck's sculptures that you might find challenging or exciting to experience in an art gallery. Describe the work, upload an image of the work, and explain your personal response to the work.

                                              "Two Women" 2005

Everything from the women's translucent skin to their fingernails, hair and expressions almost look real .Mueck’s work is always out of scale from reality. His figures are either oversized or undersized. They strive for super realism, but there is a psychological confrontation between these two contradictory realities, the effort to deceive by perfection, and the obvious discrepancy of scale. A reason why he is described as 'hyper-real'. I have learned something from Mueck to discover details of the world by myself.
